Fortunatus was embraced by eternal darkness and cold of the void as he received his conduit. The God of Machines, Solus Mekanikus, appeared to him as a vision of distant star systems, guiding him to search the final frontier of known worlds. During the ritual his mortal legs were completely destroyed and he was left half a man, forced to use a clockwork throne to move at all.
After serving a few years the worst, the most influential, and the wealthiest of merchant families in the Old World, Fortunatus was hired as a void techmancer on a notorious gloomship Alcyone. He was under the command of privateer Francoise L'Olonnais, whose reputation was so dark noone in the Old World actually believed the stories they had heard about her.
Only after a year Fortunatus found it impossible to serve such a captain, who enjoyed greatly the pain and suffering of her victims, the crew members of her captured prizes, and had perfected numerous hideous forms of torture to please herself. The other officers of Alcyone had had well enough as well, and so Captain L'Olonnais was relieved from her duties and dropped on an remote island, as none of the crew dared to touch such an evil woman, even if she was defeated.
Fortunatus took the command of the ship. This was because he was the only one able to control Alcyone's dark clockworks and work out her gloomy secrets. Soon after he had finally understood these mysteries, the ship was suddenly attacked by another privateer, Ohama Kategata of Pasificus. Captain Ohama forced Fortunatus to reveal his findings, using the very same torture devices L'Olonnnais had constructed, and then left him to die in the gloom.
However Ohama had underestimated Fortunatus, maybe because of his crippled state. Techmancer survived what was thought to be a certain death, and changed greatly by the ordeal he reappeared on the gloomport of Ameracho. He was furious and had made an oath of revenge. His hot-tempered charisma soon lighted fires on the hearts of other wronged gloomsailors, and in no time he had collected a new crew. Covertly a privateering deal was settled between Fortunatus and mysterious sponsor, and Navale was provided with a new Ship, Aethusa. On board was soon brought a hulking mass of a golem, equipped specially for gloom war and suited for boardings when excessive use of force is not considered a hindrance.
Aethusa became soon a name to be feared among the captains of Pasificus. When the war of Aresian succession began, Fortunatus set sail towards the battles, hoping to find the wretched captain Ohama. He captured 13 Pasifician ships and caused much stir on the region. Wantonly he captured three Aresian ships sailing under the fake flags of Pasificus and refused to return them back when demanded by the Aresian royals. Fortunatus was too proud to comply and thought the ships legal prices. This finally caused so much political turmoil that his amerachian sponsors were forced to put him back on a leash and he was called back to Arx Mekanicus to answer for this recklessness.
After a long trial and a short period of confinement he was set free, but only on a condition that he would never continue his privateering. Fortunatus was redeemed and provided a new ship, Pleione. With her he travelled to Golden Dome in order to continue his career as a merchant, using his knowledge of the pirate technique in order to secure most precious cargoes through dangerous environments. This could have been the end of his corsair days, if not for the Eserhaus Heresy.
During a routine trip from Ameracho to Lunarus, Pleione came to contact with a large Eserhaus gloomship Acheron, obviously trying to flee from the Old World. Even if Pleione was not equipped for such pursuits, Fortunatus decided to chase the renegade. Acheron ambushed Peione twice during the pursuit, and after many arduous days of travel Fortunatus was forced to abandon the quest. The ship's doctor, hospitaler Keinon, was seriously wounded and required the clockwork devices of a more quiet shore. As a stroke of strange luck, Acheron had chosen the very same island as her hideout. Fortunatus used a ploy to snare the Eserhaus in his trap. Pleione was disguised as a digressed omnium cargo vessel, which lured Acheron too close to Pleione, in a false hope of an easy boarding, being then taken captive herself.
The Inner Circle of Arx Machinus did not let Fortunatus keep Acheron, even if she was a superb warship much to Fortunatus' liking. It was feared that he was gotten too close to the Eserhaus captives and that the ship itself hid such things which were not to be granted easily to such a devil-may-care man as Fortunatus was. The prize had to be paid, so Instead Inner Circle gave Fortunatus a new permit to continue his old ways, and a hint to hunt down the privateer Ohama.
After the hunt Fortunatus got back his old ship, Alcyone, and continued his career as a privateer. The end of the Succession Wars of Aresia and the assassination of his sponsor in Ameracho courts got him in new trouble with the Arx Machinus. As most of his deals with the sponsor had been done covertly, not even the Ameracho navy knew much of them. A grand investigations were orchestrated and a lot of political foul play transpired. If not for a clever investigations of a one rimore detective Aulos, Fortunatus could have been imprisoned for life, or worse. At the end the charges were dropped, but Fortunatus had lost a lot of political leverage he had previously enjoyed.
Frustrated, he headed back to Outer Rim, in order to take part in wars waged between the clans of Segmentum Minorus, and perhaps, to find his salvation, promised to him by Solus Mekanimus.
