Hypatia is a Gold teacher with dissenting, inventive ideas. She sought to reform the educational system and was sent south as a punishment. Hypatia will arrive to Gharda with the next caravan; the Techmancers met her during their journey. She is extremely naïve.
Naimon, Mine foreman
Naimon is a Brass foreman running the mine. His leadership and organizational abilities keep the mine going. It is obvious he should have been a Gold; though perhaps his inventive nature is anathema in the stagnant system. Long years in hard work has made him a squatting, muscular figure.
Plato, Chief mining engineer
Plato is the Gold People administrator responsible for the Gharda mining complex. He is a bombastic buffoon with no common sense. Plato takes credit for the production, but has no hand in the success. He is a lecherous, egoistic leader, who was quite taken by Siria.
